Transforming Minds, Restoring Lives: Dr. Gilbert Coleman Jr.’s Journey of Purpose

Life & Spirit Spotlight

Sometimes purpose reveals itself gradually. Other times, life brings us to a moment when we realize that everything we have experienced has been preparing us for something greater.

For Dr. Gilbert Coleman Jr., that journey has taken him from the music industry to more than three decades of pastoral leadership, international ministry, authorship, broadcasting, and a mission to strengthen churches and empower people to discover their God-given value.

During a recent conversation on Life & Spirit Spotlight, Dr. Coleman joined host Ed Grobes to discuss his spiritual journey, the ministry that has transformed the lives of men for decades, and the new chapter that is expanding that message of transformation to women.

From the Music Industry to a Life of Purpose

Dr. Coleman’s story did not follow a straight path.

He accepted Christ at six years old but later spent time away from the church. His journey eventually took him into the military and, afterward, into the music industry, where he spent approximately 13 years and experienced a measure of success. But success and purpose are not always the same thing.

Dr. Coleman reached a point when he felt God calling him away from the life he had known and toward what he describes as his true purpose and destiny.
He answered that call.

What followed became a lifetime of ministry and service. Dr. Coleman went on to travel extensively around the world, author eight books, and pastor a church in Philadelphia for more than 30 years. Eventually, another transition came. His son, Rashid, assumed the pastoral leadership of the church, allowing Dr. Coleman to enter a new season of ministry.

Today, he describes his assignment simply but powerfully: strengthening churches and empowering pastors.

Creating a Place Where Men Could Be Heard

One of the most significant parts of Dr. Coleman’s ministry grew from something he noticed early in his years as a pastor. There were conferences, workshops and gatherings addressing the spiritual and personal needs of women, but he saw far fewer spaces intentionally designed for men. Dr. Coleman believed men needed more than another church program. They needed a place where they could be honest.

He began a men’s Bible study designed to provide an environment where men could feel secure, speak freely and discuss their lives without fear of criticism.
That simple idea eventually grew into something much larger.

During a visit to the church, radio professional Jim Turner noticed the unusual number of men attending the Bible study. Turner had originally come to discuss putting the church service on the radio, but what he witnessed caused him to suggest something different: a radio program created specifically for men.

Dr. Coleman agreed.

And Transforming the Minds of Men was born.

More Than a Radio Program

What began as a men’s Bible study became a broadcast and eventually a broader ministry. But its real impact cannot simply be measured by radio programs, conferences or attendance.
It is measured in lives. Dr. Coleman spoke about encountering men who were hurting, broken, fatherless or struggling to recognize their own worth. Some had come to believe their role in life was limited to working, paying bills and surviving.
Transforming the Minds of Men challenged that thinking.

The ministry helped men recognize that they had value, purpose and a responsibility to become whole. Dr. Coleman has watched families restored, men rediscover their sense of identity, and individuals begin stepping into leadership in their homes, churches and communities.

That work continues today through a monthly men’s breakfast hosted at Freedom Christian Bible Fellowship.
The message remains as relevant as when the ministry began: men need spaces where they can be strengthened, challenged, supported and heard.

Transformation Isn’t Just for Men

Interestingly, the success of Transforming the Minds of Men eventually created another question.
What about the women?

Dr. Coleman recalled women approaching him during the years of his radio broadcast and challenging him to create something for them as well. Their argument was difficult to ignore: a transformed man also needs a transformed woman. That idea stayed with him.

After previously hosting several women’s conferences, Dr. Coleman has seen renewed interest in ministry specifically addressing women. Recent gatherings drew more than 100 women, reinforcing the need for another avenue of teaching and empowerment.

That momentum has now led to a companion book: Transforming the Minds of Women.
It represents an expansion of the same underlying principle that has guided his work with men: genuine transformation begins when people understand their value, confront what has held them back and discover a greater sense of purpose for their lives.

A Ministry That Continues to Evolve

One of the most striking things about Dr. Coleman’s story is that retirement does not appear to be part of the vocabulary. After decades of pastoring, he could have considered his work complete. Instead, his ministry evolved. Pastoring gave way to strengthening churches and pastors. Men’s Bible study grew into broadcasting and national ministry. Men’s empowerment expanded into a new effort to reach women. Traditional teaching has expanded into digital platforms that allow his messages to reach people far beyond the walls of a church.

Through books, speaking, social media, YouTube, Spotify and other platforms, Dr. Coleman continues finding new ways to deliver messages of faith, growth and transformation.

His journey is a reminder that purpose can change its expression without changing its mission.
Sometimes a new season does not mean that the old work has ended. It means the lessons, wisdom and experiences gained along the way are preparing us to serve people in a different way.

The Life & Spirit Takeaway

Dr. Gilbert Coleman Jr.’s story is ultimately bigger than one ministry, one book or one broadcast.
It is about recognizing purpose and being willing to follow where that purpose leads.
It is about creating spaces where people can speak honestly about what they are experiencing.
It is about reminding men and women that their lives have value beyond their jobs, titles, responsibilities or past mistakes.
And perhaps most importantly, it is about understanding that transformation is not reserved for a certain age or stage of life.

There can always be another chapter.
There can always be another person to reach.
And there can always be another opportunity to use what you have learned to strengthen somebody else.

That is the kind of story we celebrate on Life & Spirit Spotlight.
